The Church of the SubGenius is a satirical postmodern parody religion, originally based in Dallas, Texas, which gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s subculture, with a large presence on the Internet. The Church describes its philosophy in the following manner: “The Church Of The SubGenius is an order of Scoffers and Blasphemers, dedicated to Total Slack, delving into Mockery Science, Sadofuturistics, Megaphysics, Scatalography, Schizophreniatrics, Morealism, Sarcastrophy, Cynisacreligion, Apocolyptionomy, ESPectorationalism, Hypno-Pediatrics, Subliminalism, Satyriology, Disto-Utopianity, Sardonicology, Fascetiouism, Ridiculophagy, and Miscellatheistic Theology.”
The prestigious law firm of Lipsitz, Green, Fahringer, Roll, Salisbury & Cambria LLP has agreed to take the case of controversial SubGenius comic Rachel Bevilacqua. Bevilacqua, who performs under the name “Rev. Magdalen,” was stripped of the custody of her 10-year-old son because of pictures found on the Internet of her performances with the satirical comedy group The SubGenius Foundation, Inc. The images were from a members-only yearly SubGenius convention in upstate New York. Rachel’s blog details the full story and is online at http://rbevilacqua.blogspot.com. She is not allowed to speak to the press, but Ivan Stang, the author and publisher of the first screed of the Church of the SubGenius, will speak to us about the church and the court case.
