This is how religion should be approached any where in the world. It is a personal choice and a personal decision and if you choose to believe in something as long as you don’t harm no one or impose your belief on no one, you should be spared the abuse. Both intellectual abuse (like subjecting you to ridicule and endless argumentation ) and physical abuse.
